What Is Human Experience Engineering?

Healthcare technology can do exactly what it was designed to do and still create a poor experience.


A platform can meet its technical requirements while leaving a member unsure of what to do next. A workflow can automate a process while creating more work for the people using it. A digital experience can provide access to information without making that information easier to understand or act on.


These aren't necessarily failures of technology.

They're often failures to account for the human experience surrounding it.

Healthcare makes that challenge particularly important. Every interaction takes place within a larger reality: complex benefits, competing priorities, clinical needs, regulatory requirements, organizational workflows and people who may already be navigating stressful or unfamiliar circumstances.


Building technology for that environment requires more than asking what a system should do.


It requires asking what people need to accomplish—and engineering the technology accordingly.


What is Human Experience Engineering?

At Healthcare Interactive, we call that approach Human Experience Engineering, or HXE.

HXE is the practice of engineering healthcare technology around the people, decisions, workflows and outcomes it is intended to support.


The word human matters because healthcare ultimately happens to and through people. Members, patients, caregivers, clinicians, service teams and administrators experience technology differently, but each brings needs, expectations and constraints that influence whether a solution actually works in practice.


The word experience matters because no interaction exists in isolation. A portal page, notification, workflow or conversation is part of a larger journey. What happened before an interaction—and what someone needs to do afterward—can matter just as much as the interaction itself.


And engineering matters because those considerations shouldn't be added at the end of development. They should influence how problems are defined, how solutions are designed and how technology is built.

That combination is the foundation of HXE.


More Than User Experience

Human Experience Engineering is related to human-centered design and user experience, but the distinction is important.


Traditional UX often concentrates on a person's interaction with a product or interface: Can they understand it? Can they navigate it? Can they complete the task?

Those are essential questions.


HXE asks them within a wider context.


What is the person ultimately trying to accomplish? What information do they need to make a decision? What happens before and after this interaction? Which organizational processes affect the experience? Where does technology help—and where might it introduce unnecessary complexity?


In healthcare, those questions can extend far beyond the screen.

A beautifully designed interface cannot compensate for an unnecessarily complicated process. Better navigation doesn't solve disconnected information. And adding another digital touchpoint isn't necessarily an improvement if it creates another place someone has to look for an answer.


The experience is the entire system from the human point of view.


What HXE Looks Like in Practice

Human Experience Engineering starts by understanding the problem from more than one perspective.

That means considering the person receiving the experience alongside the teams delivering it and the organization responsible for it.

It means examining workflows, information, decisions and technology as connected parts of the same experience rather than independent problems.

It means asking questions such as:


  • What is the person actually trying to accomplish?

  • What stands between them and that outcome?

  • What information or action matters most at this moment?

  • What burden does the current process place on members or staff?

  • Where should technology simplify the experience rather than add another layer to it?

  • How will we know whether the experience is working?


The answers can shape everything from architecture and workflows to interfaces, communications and measurement.

The goal isn't technology for technology's sake.

It's technology engineered to work within the realities of healthcare.


Why the Human Experience Matters

Healthcare organizations operate in an environment where experience and performance are increasingly difficult to separate.


When people cannot understand information, navigate processes or determine what to do next, the consequences don't stop with frustration. Complexity can create additional service needs, operational burden and barriers to engagement.


The reverse is also true.


Technology designed around real human needs has the potential to make healthcare

easier to navigate, make work easier to perform and help organizations create more coherent experiences across the people they serve.


That is why HXE begins with humans without ignoring the systems around them.


Healthcare technology still has to be secure, scalable, reliable and technically sound. It still has to operate within organizational, regulatory and financial realities.

HXE doesn't replace those requirements.

It expands what we mean by engineering a solution well.

Because in healthcare, a system hasn't fully succeeded simply because it works.
