Latest Challenge for American Business: Disengaged Employees

BETHESDA, MD. (September 22, 2010) – Nearly two-thirds of Americans are completely disengaged from their jobs – and are consequently undermining their employers’ bottom line, according to a new study from the Human Performance Institute.

 

Fortunately, there are several ways that business leaders can reverse this cycle of employee disengagement and rebuild their organizations’ depleted human capital. According to Henry Cha, president of software development firm Healthcare Interactive, it all starts by focusing on employee wellness.

 

“A healthy workforce is a productive workforce,” Cha said. “Employees can’t be expected to perform at a high level if they’re ill, stressed, or burned out. Employer-sponsored wellness programs can help revitalize workers and ensure that they’re fully engaged in their work and their company’s mission.”

 

Research from the consulting firm Towers Watson shows that companies with the most engaged workforces posted increases in operating income of 19 percent and in earnings per share of 28 percent year to year. By contrast, firms with the least engaged workforces saw their operating income decrease by a third and their earnings per share decline by 11 percent.
